Atalanta midfielder Robin Gosens has revealed that he is disappointed that Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold will not play in the Champions League clash between the two sides.

Liverpool face Atalanta at Anfield on Wednesday night and Gosens says that it is a shame Alexander-Arnold is missing the game through injury.

Gosens describes Alexander-Arnold as one of the best wide players in the world and is frustrated that he will not be able to test himself against the Englishman.

As quoted by The Liverpool Echo, Gosens said this in response to a question about the England international in his pre-match press conference. “It is a shame he is not playing tomorrow because as a player I always want to test myself against the very best in the world.

“It is a real shame Alexander-Arnold will not be playing tomorrow. There is no doubt he is one of the strongest wide players in the world.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

It is great to see that players from other teams are looking at Liverpool’s players with such respect. For Gosens to be desperate to test himself against Alexander-Arnold shows just how far the Liverpool man has come in recent years, with the right-back now being viewed as one of the best – if not the best – in his position in the world by other players.

Alexander-Arnold’s personal form in recent seasons has been rewarded with some impressive accolades. He was named Premier League Young Player of the Season for the 2019/20 campaign and has been in the PFA Team of the Year for the last two domestic seasons. His greatest personal achievement, however, was being named in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2019 – meaning that he was voted as the best right-back in the world for 2019 – an incredible moment for the defender.

Those accomplishments could be why Gosens holds Alexander-Arnold in such high esteem and why he wanted to face off against him on Wednesday night. It is a shame that the pair will not be able to play against each other this season, but maybe they will get another chance in the future – with Alexander-Arnold only 22 and Gosens 26.
