Atalanta announced that defender Odilon Kossounou has undergone surgery for a serious adductor injury that is expected to keep him out for three months.

The centre-back had expected the worst when suffering a thigh strain and tests showed there was a significant lesion to the tendon in the right adductor muscle.

It was so bad that it required an operation, performed by specialist Doctor Ramon Cugat in Barcelona.

The surgery was done on Friday and initial reports suggest this means Kossounou will be out of action for circa three months.

Curiously, he had only been purchased in the summer to replace Giorgio Scalvini, who was ruled out for six months by a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The Ivory Coast international only celebrated his 24th birthday earlier this month and arrived on loan from Bayer Leverkusen at a cost of €5m with option to buy for a further €25m.

It now remains to be seen if the club will decide to keep him on a permanent basis in the light of this setback.

He made 12 Serie A appearances, four in the Champions League and one for the Supercoppa Italiana.
