Eddie Howe and Newcastle United.
What can you say?
I find it absolutely astonishing what the Newcastle United Head Coach has achieved.
I am talking about the last nine weeks or so in particular.
This despite a backdrop of missing a whole team of first team squad players for most of the time these past couple of months, as indeed has been the case for over seven months in total!
This Tuesday morning though, I want to concentrate firstly on what has happened in the Premier League these last nine matches, since the start of March 2024 for Newcastle United.
This is the Premier League table on Tuesday 7 May 2024:
These are the last nine Premier League results for each of the top eight clubs:
23 points – Manchester City – Played 9 Won 7 Drawn 2 Lost 0 Goals For 28 Goals Against 7
22 points – Arsenal – Played 9 Won 7 Drawn 1 Lost 1 Goals For 20 Goals Against 5
19 points – Newcastle United – Played 9 Won 6 Drawn 1 Lost 2 Goals For 24 Goals Against 11
18 points – Chelsea – Played 9 Won 5 Drawn 3 Lost 1 Goals For 26 Goals Against 16
15 points – Liverpool – Played 9 Won 4 Drawn 3 Lost 2 Goals For 17 Goals Against 13
12 points – Aston Villa – Played 9 Won 3 Drawn 3 Lost 3 Goals For 14 Goals Against 17
10 points – Manchester United – Played 9 Won 2 Drawn 4 Lost 3 Goals For 16 Goals Against 19
10 points – Tottenham – Played 9 Won 3 Drawn 1 Lost 5 Goals For 14 Goals Against 19
When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
At this crucial pressurised staged of the season, only the two very best teams in the country have better form than Newcastle United these past nine weeks.
However, in reality it goes back even further for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United.
These are the Newcastle United stats for their last 14 Premier League matches:
Played 14 Won 8 Drawn 3 Lost 3 Goals For 37 Goals Against 24
This actually covers the last 16+ weeks of Premier League action going back to mid-January 2024, in this period of time Eddie Howe’s NUFC have only lost in the Premier League to Arsenal, Palace and Chelsea, all away from home.
When we take matches in all competitions in this same time period for Newcastle United:
Played 17 Won 10 Drawn 3 Lost 4 Goals For 40 Goals Against 17
The only additional defeat in that time was the away FA Cup loss at Man City to go with the away PL defeats at Chelsea, Arsenal and Palace.
However, on the subject of Newcastle United’s (supposedly) terrible away form. The reality is that this has been largely turned around by Eddie Howe, despite double figures of unavailable players week after week, month after month.
The last 11 Newcastle United away matches in all competitions, have seen seven wins and four defeats, not exactly a disaster. How many other Premier League teams have won seven of their last eleven away games (in all competitions)???
As I said at the start, Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United players deserve huge credit, not only producing all of these positive results BUT also scoring 37 goals in these last 14 Premier League matches.
