Aston Villa could target Lille striker Jonathan David after the World Cup, says journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Villa Park in the past, and O’Rourke can see Unai Emery going after him if he performs in Qatar.

What is the latest news involving David?

David appears to be attracting a lot of interest from the Premier League ahead of the January transfer window.

According to Media Foot, Newcastle United are planning to make a fresh move for the Canada international after failing to sign him in the summer.

Elsewhere, a report from Jeunes Footeux claims that Chelsea manager Graham Potter wants to add a new No.9 to his squad and has David on his list.

A deal for the former Gent man is unlikely to be cheap, though, with the same outlet claiming that it will take an offer of around £52m to get him out of Lille.

What has O’Rourke said about David and Villa?

Back in May, another French publication reported that Villa considered David going into the summer transfer window, and O’Rourke would not be surprised if they looked at him again.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “I’m sure that they will be looking at the World Cup to see if there are any strikers that maybe come to their mind of being potential targets, which Jonathan David, I’m sure, might be. Unai Emery, I think, would like to bring in a marquee striker if he could in January.”

Would David be a good signing for Villa?

Without a doubt. £52m is obviously a lot of money, but David is a quality striker and has time to get even better.

This season, David has scored nine goals in 15 league appearances, while last term, he registered 15 in 38. From what he has seen, former Leicester City and Canada striker Iain Hume already thinks the Lille star is a “world-class player”.

Looking at their squad, Villa do not have the worst set of forwards. In fact, on their day, Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings are very dangerous No.9s. The latter proved that just before the season’s hiatus after scoring twice in his side’s 2-1 win against Brighton.

If Emery wants to evolve this Villa team, though, it is only normal for him to look at potential upgrades. And if his form at Lille is anything to go by, then David could be just that.
