Aston Villa host Everton on Saturday in a meeting which, before a ball is kicked at least, may be dominated by the former players in each dugout.

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard faced each other 34 times on the pitch but it was how they could (or couldn't) play together for England which dominated the increasingly insufferable dialogue about the duo.

Aston Villa team news

While Kortney Hause remains sidelined with a knee problem, his fellow centre-back Tyrone Mings has had his availability questioned by Gerrard.

After stripping Mings of the captaincy in the summer, Gerrard left the centre-back out of the starting XI for Villa's opening day defeat to Bournemouth, insisting he will return when he 'looks me in the eye and shows that he's ready to play'.

Everton team news vs Aston Villa

Barely a week into the new campaign Everton have already been besieged by fitness concerns. Following the reveal of a knee injury for Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the eve of the season, Ben Godfrey was forced off with a fractured fibula a quarter of an hour into the 1-0 loss to Chelsea.

Yerry Mina also sustained a problem against the blues, injuring his ankle ligament so severely the club have sent him to a specialist.

While Andros Townsend isn't expected to return until April, both midfielders Andre Gomes and Tom Davies are nearing full fitness.

Everton Starting 11: Pickford; Holgate, Keane, Tarkowski; Patterson, Doucoure, Iwobi, Mykolenko; McNeil, Gordon, Gray.Bench: Begovic, Vinagre, Davies, Allan, Gbamin, Alli, Rondon.

Both clubs began the new campaign on the back foot but suffered defeats to sides of drastically differing pedigrees; Villa's victors spent last season in the Championship while Everton's were in the Champions League.

Nevertheless, Villa may have the edge over an increasingly depleted Everton side that they got the better of home and away last season (without conceding a goal).
