In a recent interview with Villa News, BBC Sport pundit Alan Hutton urged his former club Aston Villa to move in for Bologna attacker Lewis Ferguson. Hutton said,

“I like him, I think what he’s done is incredible taking that move to Bologna.

“He’s been outstanding, he’s actually captained the team at times as well so he’ll be coming back to Scotland (for the international break), hopefully he can get in the international team.

“In terms of Villa, does he have the ability? Yeah, I think he does, I think obviously at Villa there’s a lot of competition as well, you think you’ve got Emi Buendia to come back as well.

“I think Lewis Ferguson’s best position is like that number 10 role where he can assist, he can score goals, he also works hard.

“He would look at the likes of John McGinn who came and out of nowhere a little bit and look at what he’s been able to do.

“So, he’ll believe in his own ability and I think he’s got what it takes to make it in England it’s just whether he’ll get as much game time as he’d like at Aston Villa.”

Ferguson is having a fine campaign at the Italian club and deserves credit for netting six goals and picking up five assists in 30 matches for them this season in various competitions. The Scottish talent has proven his value at times in the opponent’s half by averaging 1.9 shots and 1.1 key passes per game in Serie A. He has even taken care of the ball when interchanging possession with his teammates based on his pass completion rate of 88.2% in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).

Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Recruit Ferguson?

Ferguson can find some space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He can shoot the ball with power and precision from long range and can create a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third.

However, Ferguson is still unproven at the highest level and would need some time to adapt to life in Premier League football if the Villans manage to bring him on board this year. He would add more firepower to Aston Villa‘s frontline.

At 24, the best is yet to come from Ferguson, so Unai Emery would be wise to recruit him in the upcoming transfer window.
