Danny Mills has urged Aston Villa to U-turn on Ahmed Elmohamady and offer him a new contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England and Manchester City defender insisted every squad needs “good tourists” who can be relied upon when needed but will not kick up a fuss when out of the side.
This site revealed during the week Villa have no plans to offer the Egypt international a new deal with his current contract set to expire in the summer.
Instead, Dean Smith wants Frederic Guilbert to return to Villa Park and challenge Matty Cash for the right-back spot.
Guilbert is currently out on loan to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg and has already provided two assists and scored once since making the switch in January.
Asked whether he thought Elmohamady could still play a role for Villa, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I always think you get to that point where you need squad players.
“If I was a manager now, realistically at that level you’re working with a squad of 15 perhaps that are going to play the majority of the games in the Premier League.
“You need squad players who can come in for a few games, you need quality.
“We would call them good tourists, they go away, train well, look after themselves and don’t cause problems. They do the away games and all those kind of things.
“You’ve got to have five or six of them around the first-team squad.”
Elmohamady is currently enjoying a rare run in the team with Cash out injured.
He has started their last four Premier League games but struggled to deal with Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes and was arguably at fault for Sheffield United’s goal in their shock 1-0 win over Villa.
In other news, Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped an Aston Villa system change as big news emerges from Bodymoor Heath.
