Record-breaking Villa stun Arsenal

Scorer: McGinn 7′

Unai Emery got the last laugh against his former club as Aston Villa stunned a very frustrated Arsenal.

A brilliant team move proved to be the only goal as the hosts hit the ground running. John McGinn swivelled in the box, beating both Ben White and a diving David Raya for his fourth league goal this season (a personal best).

Arsenal struggled to click together in front of goal, with zero shots on target at the 30-minute mark. Even when they got up and running, luck wasn’t on their side, which allowed Villa to hang on by the skin of their teeth.

Martin Ødegaard missed a handful of clear opportunities, Diego Carlos cleared an effort off the line, Ollie Watkins avoided a disastrous own-goal, and Bukayo Saka saw a goal correctly ruled out for offside.

Late drama ensued when Kai Havertz equalised in stoppage time, but VAR ruled another goal out for the Gunners due to handball.

The result means Villa have now won a club-record 15 consecutive games at home (notably beating champions Manchester City last time out) and sit third, only one point off second-place Arsenal.

Fresh humiliation for Man Utd

Scorers: Solanke 5′, Billing 69′, Sensei 73′

Manchester United’s season-long woe continued as they were comprehensively humiliated by Bournemouth.

Dominic Solanke broke the deadlock in the opening five minutes with a backheeled finish after Lewis Cook had pounced on poor defending.

The Red Devils’ best chance of a response fell to Diogo Dalot, who lashed the ball into the side-netting midway through the second half.

But the visitors further punished Erik ten Hag’s side mere moments later when Philip Billing headed home Marcus Tavernier’s cross from the left.

Marcos Senesi added a third in the final quarter of an hour as he rose to meet another Tavernier delivery as the Cherries coasted to a first-ever win at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s side were spared further indignity as a fourth goal from Dango Ouattara in stoppage time was overruled by VAR for a handball in the build-up.

Forest ease the pressure on Cooper

Scorers: Cunha 32′; Toffalo 14′

Nottingham Forest eased the pressure on Steve Cooper with their first point in five Premier League outings at Wolves.

Harry Toffalo handed the visitors an early first-half lead when he met Neco Williams’ cross with a clinical header at the far post.

But Gary O’Neil’s side struck back through Matheus Cunha, who stroked the ball home from Pablo Sarabia’s cutback at the byline.

Anthony Elanga went closest to restoring Forest’s lead early in the second half with a right-footed shot that crashed back off the woodwork.

Brighton avoid shock defeat to Burnley

Scorers: Adingra 77′; Odobert 45′

Brighton avoided a shock home defeat as they were held by relegation strugglers Burnley.

Vincent Kompany’s side had James Trafford to thank for repelling a series of attempts from the hosts in the first half.

The Clarets soon found a way through on the stroke of half time when Wilson Odobert hit a superb curling effort from the edge of the area.

But Simon Adingra restored the balance of power with a bounding header from Pascal Groß’s hooked cross to draw the Seagulls level.

Sheff Utd earn first win since Wilder’s return

Scorers: McAtee 45+1′

Chris Wilder marked his return as Sheffield United manager with a cagey win over Brentford.

The hosts engineered their decisive breakthrough in first-half added time as James McAtee produced a wonder strike.

Although the remain rooted to the foot of the table, the Blades are now level with relegation rivals Burnley on eight points apiece.

Late comeback puts Liverpool back on top

Scorers: Mateta (PEN) 57′; Salah 76′, Elliott 90+1′

Liverpool ascended to the Premier League’s summit courtesy of a smash-and-grab win at Crystal Palace.

Odsonne Édouard proved instrumental when the hosts won a penalty before a VAR review overturned the decision for Will Hughes’ challenge on Wataru Endo.

The Eagles were belatedly awarded a spot kick in the second half when Jarrell Quansah clipped Jean-Philippe Mateta in the area, which the striker comfortably dispatched.

But Roy Hodgson’s men had to see out the closing stage with 10 men after Jordan Ayew was dismissed for a second bookable offence after fouling Harvey Elliott.

They were pulled level barely a minute later as Mohamed Salah notched his 200th Liverpool goal and 150th in the Premier League with a deflection off Nathaniel Clyne.

Palace’s woes continued as third-choice goalkeeper Remi Matthews made his debut late on as a replacement for the injured Sam Johnstone.

At the start of 10 minutes’ added time at Selhurst Park, substitute Elliott produced a stunning long-range strike to send the Reds hurtling towards top spot.

There was still time for a late moment of drama as a returning Alisson produced a vital stop to keep out Joachim Anderson’s attempt at a corner.
