Aston Villa midfielder Emiliano Buendia is reportedly set to undergo medical tests on Tuesday ahead of his move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in the January transfer window.

The one-cap Argentina international has struggled to win a place in Unai Emery’s starting lineup following his recovery from a serious injury and is seeking gametime elsewhere.

Villa have reached a “full agreement” on a half-season loan deal with Leverkusen, which includes an option to buy, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the buy option is set at around €20 million and the player has signed a one-year contract extension with the Villans, tying him to the club until 2027. Romano also claims that the Midlands outfit have agreed personal terms with Chelsea defender Axel Disasi ahead of a potential move.

Buendia joined Villa from Norwich City in 2021 for a transfer fee of £33m rising to £38m and became a regular starter over the following two seasons.

The 28-year-old missed the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign after undergoing surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which left him sidelined for nine months.

Buendia has made 12 appearances, all as a substitute, in the Premier League this season and started three times in all competitions, two of which came in the League Cup. Emery praised the former Getafe man after he started in the 1-0 defeat away to Monaco in the Uefa Champions League last week.

“Buendia played a fantastic match,” the Spaniard said. “Of course, I am very happy with a lot of players. Today, especially with Emi Buendia, because he has the option to leave but today we needed him and he played fantastic with his qualities, fantastic mentality and fantastic with his commitment with the squad.”

Buendia will be looking to get his career back on track at Leverkusen, who are very busy in the transfer market ahead of this week’s deadline. Striker Victor Boniface could leave for Saudi Arabia, while Mario Hermoso is expected to join on loan from AS Roma.

The German outfit are second in the Bundesliga standings, six points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
