Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece believes Dean Smith has built a tight-knit squad at Aston Villa.

The Midlands-based club made several high-profile signings in the summer, but it seems that the Villa boss has got all his players working well together already.

How have Villa started the season?

It has not been a perfect start to the season for the Villans, as they have lost three of their seven top-flight games, including their most recent match against Tottenham.

However, they have also picked up three victories, with their most eye-catching win coming against Manchester United at Old Trafford last month.

Smith's men have collected 10 points so far, and are currently sat just inside the top half of the table.

What has Preece said about Villa?

The Premier League outfit have switched to a 3-5-2 in recent weeks, which has meant that wingers such as Emiliano Buendia, Bertrand Traore and Anwar El Ghazi have struggled for game time.

Preece feels that these players will be ready and willing to make an impact when called upon, though, and has claimed that Smith having selection dilemmas is a blessing as it shows how strong his current squad is.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about Villa, Preece said: “If the wingers come in, they might have to do a job defensively if they stick to that system, and they’ll have to do that. It’s that team shift again, that camaraderie and that willingness to get that three points for the team.

“And they’re all in it together. I’ve seen that closeness, that togetherness they’ve got this season. It’s a nice problem to have, and I think Villa have been blessed with a much better squad this season.”

How far can Villa's "togetherness" take them?

Villa's supporters will be pleased to hear that the players all appear to be singing from the same hymn sheet, as team spirit is crucial when building a successful team.

Of course, the side must also produce high-quality performances on the pitch, but if they can combine positive displays with the strong camaraderie within the squad, Villa could be on course for a very good campaign.

The opening weeks of the season have highlighted that there is very little to choose between the teams battling for positions outside the top four. Smith now has an excellent squad at his disposal, and if he can keep the group happy, there is no reason why they can't push for Europe this term.
