Barcelona’s compromising financial state means very few players are safe from the chopping block this summer.

Difficult departures are being considered the antidote to cure the financial crisis, which has given rise to several places staring at an uncertain future.

Among them is Barcelona’s star centre-back, Ronald Araujo. The Uruguayan has established himself as a key figure for the Catalan giants, but injuries as well as his high market value may compel him to hit the exit door this summer.

Aston Villa option ruled out

Reports recently argued that Premier League side Aston Villa were planning on making a summer swoop for Ronald Araujo, with coach Unai Emery and sporting director Monchi a fan of Araujo’s profile.

The fact that Monchi and Emery were present in Barcelona’s game against Valencia and had a meeting with the club’s management added fuel to the fire.

However, according to Helana Condis Araujo’s move to Aston Villa is completely ruled out and unrealistic.

Indeed, sources say they have the position more than covered with four high-level centre-backs: Ezri Konsa, Diego Carlos, Tyrone Mings, and Pau Torres.

Moreover, the Barcelona captain’s steep price of €80 million acts as another deterrent for most teams.

Araujo could still be on his way out

While Aston Villa may not turn out to be Araujo’s eventual landing spot, an exit cannot yet be ruled out.

Bayern Munich were heavily interested in Araujo last winter and are once again eager to sign him this summer. Meanwhile, Manchester United are another interested party.

Additionally, the fact that Araujo has not replied to the Catalans’ contract offer raises more questions about his future.

Considering he continues to grapple with knee discomfort, Araujo may well have played his last game for the club.
