Long-time Ligue 1 right-back and current Aston Villa player Frédéric Guilbert may be headed back to Strasbourg, according to reports from L’Équipe. The French fullback was loaned to the club from January 2021 to June 2022. He is under contract with Aston Villa until next June, but it is being reported that he will be released by the club. While the Alsatians seem to be the frontrunners to land Guilbert, Troyes are also interested in the 28-year-old. However, his salary demands could put the Champagne region-based club out of the discussion. In England, there are reports of Championship clubs who would like to bring in the French right-back, but he reportedly prefers a return to France. Guilbert has only made 32 appearances for Aston Villa in all competitions. The Caen youth product is a strong defender and has the ability to bring the ball up the field. Though Strasbourg’s right side has been one of the brighter parts of the team, depth is needed, and bringing in a player with the quality of Frédéric Guilbert would make an immediate impact.
