Aston Villa Ponder Entering The Race For 26-Year-Old Striker: Is He The Right Choice?

Aston Villa are no longer the team that settled for mid-table mediocrity. Last season, they made it clear, as Villa played in the Champions League and showed signs of ambition. Next season, they will be playing in the Europa League, and Unai Emery has managed to transform the club’s style without making much noise.

The Emery project has caught the attention of many players. However, the ongoing summer brings doubts and key decisions, and one of them revolves around Ollie Watkins. If the English striker leaves, Villa will have to make a move fast, and there appears to be a name that sounds strongly in the ears of several European clubs: Randal Kolo Muani.

The situation of Aston Villa and a possible vacancy in the attack

Since the arrival of Emery, Aston Villa have changed the culture of the club. The team left behind defensive blips and found a sustained offensive rhythm, especially with Watkins leading the line. However, rumours of his possible departure are growing by the week. If it comes to fruition, it would not simply be about finding a replacement, but finding someone who fits into an intense, physical and demanding structure. Emery does not want stars. He wants players who understand his system and are willing to work off the ball. That profile narrows down the options.

According to Foot Mercato, clubs like Manchester United and Newcastle United have already made contact to sign Kolo Muani. However, journalist Sacha Tavolieri mentions that Aston Villa could also enter the fray if Watkins leaves. Juventus, who had him on loan, want to keep him, but nothing has been finalised yet. In the meantime, Villa are keeping a close eye on Watkins. The interest is there, but their action will depend on the future of players up top.

A powerful and versatile striker

Kolo Muani needs little introduction. At 26, he is quick, has technical attributes and is a team man. The Frenchman’s numbers at Juventus were not eye-catching, but they were consistent, with eight goals in 16 games in the Serie A. He can play as a pure number nine, but also adapts to the flanks. That would fit in with Emery’s flexible system, which values mobility and defensive sacrifice in his attackers. However, his time at PSG left doubts about his impact, especially due to his lack of impact at important moments.

From the outside, it sounds attractive. Villa need to strengthen if they lose Watkins, and Kolo Muani has the right profile. His pace, his ability to press high and his mobility up top make him a good fit for Emery’s system. Moreover, playing in the Europa League could be an important selling point. However, paying more than €60 million for someone who needs to find his feet again does not seem sensible. The Frenchman’s performance in Turin was positive, but his adventure in Paris is still a question mark.

Is it worth the risk?

Villa must be smart. If PSG accept a loan with an option to buy, then yes, go for it. However, if the negotiation demands an immediate payment, it is better to wait. Emery is building something solid, and he doesn’t need signings that generate financial pressure with no guarantee of return. Besides, competing with Manchester United and Newcastle will be tough. The only thing that can tip the balance is the sporting project. If Kolo Muani appreciates a stable environment, with a coach who can boost him and guarantee minutes, Villa could be the best option, but not at any price.
