The pressure on Steve Bruce intensified on Saturday night as Newcastle again went down without a whimper at Aston Villa.
In the unlucky 13th minute for the Magpies, they fell behind as a shambolic miscued clearance from Fabian Schär was pounced upon by Ollie Watkins to head home.
He had a second ruled out for offside but Villa did double their advantage before the interval when Bertrand Traoré slapped a strike in off the underside of the bar – aided by some slack defending.
They were lifeless at the other end too, rarely venturing forward and looking incapable of causing the Villans’ defence any issues, finishing with just one shot on target.
Newcastle remain in 16th, while Villa climb out of the bottom half as they move up to eighth.
