Aston Villa midfielder Lucy Staniforth has been put on standby for international duty with England at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via a media update from The Football Association this morning.

Staniforth did not make England head coach Sarina Wiegman’s initial squad selection last month, however, she has been drafted in as cover with Manchester City forward Jess Park having withdrawn as a result of her ongoing shoulder injury. Park was a reserve herself but she is returning to Manchester City to continue her rehabilitation over the summer.

It has been reported that Staniforth will now link-up with the England squad at their St George’s Park training base. She will prepare for the upcoming tournament with the team and will also fly out with them to Australia. Staniforth will be on standby  alongside Manchester United centre-back Maya Le Tissier until England play their opening match at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 against Haiti on Saturday 22 July.

England will play their final warm-up match on home soil this Saturday when they take on Portugal at Stadium MK in Milton Keynes. The squad are scheduled to fly out to Australia on Wednesday 5 July.
