Aston Villa are working on finalising a deal for Rosenborg’s Sverre Nypan, according to The Atheltic’s David Ornstein.
Clubs across Europe rate the 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder highly, and he has attracted strong interest throughout the continent.
Arsenal and Girona have been linked with the teenager, but Villa have surged ahead in the race.
There is growing optimism at Villa Park that Nypan wants the move, but Villa still need to reach an agreement with Rosenborg.
They must also reach personal terms with the player before the deal can be completed.
Villa are working hard to make progress on both fronts as they try to beat other suitors to the talented youngster.
Despite the interest from other top clubs, Villa are confident of convincing the Norway youth international to join them.
Nypan has been a regular member of the Rosenborg senior team since he was 16 years old and is widely regarded as a future star.
He is capable of playing both as a central midfielder and in a more attacking role behind the forwards.
His playing style has been compared to Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, owing to his exceptional technique and vision.
Arsenal were optimistic about signing him after productive discussions in January, but the transfer did not materialise.
Nypan chose to stay in Norway for the remainder of the season instead of leaving during the winter.
Girona, part of the City Football Group, have also been discussing signing him. He could join Manchester City after gaining more experience in Spain.
Villa view him as a player who could develop alongside Morgan Rogers, forming a strong midfield core under Emery.
