Aston Villa will be heavily linked with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and a host of other central defenders after missing out on Matthias Ginter, says transfer insider Dean Jones.

Gomez is thought to be high on manager Steven Gerrard’s shortlist, and Jones is expecting more names to emerge between now and June.

What is the latest news involving Villa’s centre-back search?

According to Football Insider, Germany international Ginter rejected a big-money offer from Villa before deciding to join Freiburg from Borussia Monchengladbach on a free transfer.

It means the Villans will now have to turn elsewhere in their quest to bring a new centre-half to Villa Park this summer.

They could now launch a move for Gomez, if that was not already the plan, with Gerrard seemingly keen on the Liverpool star.

Last month, the Daily Mirror reported that he will test his old side’s resolve to keep hold of Gomez ahead of the 2022/23 season.

What has Jones said about Villa’s centre-back search?

Jones believes Villa will be strongly linked with Gomez and several other centre-halves now after missing out on Ginter.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the football journalist said: “I honestly think Villa will be linked with loads of centre-backs between now and June.

“Joe Gomez is obviously one that Gerrard has had his eye on for a while now with his contract situation – still possible that Liverpool renew that, though, so he’s waiting to see.”

Why does Gerrard want a new centre-back?

If reports are to be believed, then Gerrard is not too convinced with his current options in central defence.

Captain Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa have been Villa’s first-choice centre-half pairing for a while now, but it does not seem like they have completely won over the Liverpool legend.

Football Insider claims that Gerrard could look to upgrade on both Mings and Konsa in the upcoming transfer window, so arrivals at the back seem inevitable.

It remains to be seen, though, whether they can lure Gomez away from Liverpool. While the England international, who is thought to be on around £75,000 a week at Anfield, is not a regular starter under Jurgen Klopp right now, he plays for a team that has competed for every honour this season.

It is not the kind of environment a player will be dying to get away from. That being said, if Gomez wants minutes, especially with the World Cup coming up, then leaving may be his only option.
