It was a rip-roaring start for Villa, who came into the match looking to take a big step towards securing first place in Group E.

They found the opening goal they were looking for inside five minutes when Moussa Diaby showed his supreme quality, gliding down the wing before cutting inside to fire his shot into the bottom corner.

But the home sides’ lead only last 16 minutes, as Legia stunned the Villa Park crowd by equalising through Ernest Muçi to reclaim parity.

It took until the second half for Villa to take a stranglehold on the natch, and the group, once again. Dramatically, it was Álex Moreno who fired Villa in front in his first start since returning from injury.

Moreno’s strike was all Villa would need to hold on and collect all three points to confirm their qualification to the knockout rounds with a game to spare.
