Aston Villa are pondering a move in the summer for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Having already acquired the services of Boubacar Kamara from Marseille and the on-loan Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona, Villa are now looking to strengthen their options in other areas of the pitch although they might need to free up space in the squad before making another acquisition.

The Villans are set to pursue defensive reinforcements after they finished 14th in the just-concluded Premier League campaign, conceding a whopping 54 goals across their 38 league games.

Carlos has been a huge presence at the back for Sevilla over the last couple of seasons since joining from Nantes in 2019 so it is no surprise to see him linked with a move away from the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Newcastle United have been previously credited with an interest in the Brazilian defender, who asked to leave Sevilla during the January transfer window, but they had to settle for Dan Burn instead.

Albeit with more competition this time around, Eddie Howe’s men could flex their financial muscle once again and make another attempt to lure Carlos to Tyneside especially with Sven Botman, another target for the Magpies, now closing in on a move to Serie A champions AC Milan.

However, it remains to be seen whether Sevilla would be willing to let go of both of their two first-choice centre-backs at the same time as Jules Kounde is widely expected to join Chelsea following the completion of the Blues’ takeover.

This could see Steven Gerrard’s men turn their attention elsewhere with Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Liverpool’s Joe Gomez also reportedly under consideration at Villa Park ahead of the start of the upcoming transfer window on June 10.
