Smith said of his reinvigorated Aston Villa side: "Last season was a tough start, a baptism and we had to bed in a lot of players.

This season we just felt there's no newness about it. There's an expectancy from myself that we'll be much better this season."

The head coach left out Mbwana Samatta, below, and Frederic Guilbert from his 18-man squad this evening, with the pair replaced by new arrivals Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash in Villa's starting XI.

Smith was asked whether the duo could be heading for the exit prior to the October 5 transfer deadline, but said: "That was just selection. Players who I believe have done well (in training) get in the team."

On potential incomings, the boss added: "I'm still discussing with Christian (Purslow) and Johan (Lange) about getting some more in but we'll have to see."
