Aston Villa assistant manager John Terry hailed the impact of protesting Chelsea fans on the collapse of the Super League breakaway.

Furious fans brought the roads around Stamford Bridge to a standstill as Chelsea finally caved in to pressure and abandoned the Super League.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel and his players were stuck on the team coach for 45 minutes as the 1,000-strong crowd made their feelings clear.

That meant the kick-off for Chelsea's Premier League clash with Brighton, who were also delayed, was forced back by 15 minutes.

Scenes of anger turned into more of a party atmosphere when supporters learned their club were pulling out of the controversial project.

And club legend Terry reacted to the scenes on Instagram writing: “Unbelievable from the supporters tonight. Now Chelsea FC, do the right thing and be the first team to leave."

Faced with a storm of protest, Chelsea decided even before their fans gathered that the Super League had just become too toxic.

The contracts they signed are described as binding but the club will now begin the process of ripping them up, reports the Daily Star.
