In a recent report, Fichajes mentioned that Aston Villa are among clubs hoping to sign Atletico Madrid ace Matheus Cunha. It has been mentioned that the Villans could face competition in the form of Manchester United in pursuit of the Brazilian forward.

Cunha’s Unimpressive Campaign In Spanish Football

Cunha has endured a frustrating season at the Wanda Metropolitano as he has struggled to be consistent with his productivity in front of the opponent’s goal. The 23-year-old has been involved in 17 matches for the Madrid club during this campaign, picking up a couple of assists in the process across all competitions.

The eight-time Brazil international has performed well at times by averaging 1.1 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution after completing 78.5% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).

His current contract with Atletico is set to run out in the summer of 2026. However, the Villans could potentially land him on a cut-price deal as he has struggled to be a threat on the attacking third of the pitch this season.

Is Matheus Cunha A Decent Option For Arsenal Head Coach Unai Emery?

Cunha can create space for himself to get a few shots in at goal. He can even engineer some decent openings for others around him and is usually clever with his movements in and around the opponent’s penalty box.

The eight-time Brazil international has to find a way to be more prolific in the final third. Cunha is primarily a centre-forward but can also serve as a winger on either flank if needed. However, at 23, he still has a lot of room to grow as a footballer.

Hence, a move to Villa Park could be a good move for Cunha at this stage of his playing career. He is good enough to offer some decent competition for Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings at Aston Villa in the coming seasons.

However, it remains to be seen whether he can cope with the physical side of English football if Unai Emery can find a way to bring him on board next year. He will undoubtedly be a good option for the Villans to pursue this January or at the end of this campaign as he has what it takes to help the West Midlands club push for a top-half finish in the Premier League over the next few years.
