Youri Tielemans has agreed a deal to join Aston Villa following the expiry of his Leicester City contract.

The Belgian midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal and an approach in the summer of 2022 looked very likely. However, Mikel Arteta opted not to make a bid with Tielemans out of contract this summer.

Tielemans has impressed since joining Leicester in January 2019, though his 2022/23 campaign was very disappointing as the Foxes were relegated from the Premier League.

He scored the only goal of the game in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea, engraving his name into club folklore.

It was confirmed by Leicester last week that the former Monaco man would be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

And Aston Villa quickly raced into the front of the queue for Tielemans’ signature, with head coach Unai Emery eager to get a deal done ‘quickly’.

This was reported by The Athletic and the same outlet, specifically, David Ornstein claimed on Saturday that Emery has got his wish with an agreement already reached.

The report actually says Tielemans is ‘now undergoing a medical’, even though he is technically still under contract at the King Power Stadium.

Aston Villa have beaten several big clubs to Tielemans’ signature, including a number of teams in the Champions League.

Emery’s side confirmed the agreement in a club statement on Saturday evening.

The statement read: “Aston Villa is delighted to announce that the club has reached an agreement to sign Youri Tielemans.

“The Belgian international will officially become a Villan on July 1 after his contract with Leicester City has expired.”

The 26-year-old scored three and made two assists in 31 Premier League appearances as Leicester finished 18th in 22/23.

He will play in the Europa Conference League next term after the Villans finished seventh under Emery.

TalkSPORT are also reporting that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ‘on the verge’ of joining Villa on a free transfer.

Like Tielemans, Oxlade-Chamberlain is out of contract at the end of this month. The English midfielder is leaving Liverpool.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has struggled to stay fit since joining the Reds from Arsenal in August 2017.

The 29-year-old only managed 13 appearances in 22/23. His 20-minute cameo against Manchester City on April 1 was the last time he was in a Premier League matchday squad.
