Aston Villa are not in a ‘rush’ to sign anymore more player, but Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo ‘ticks a lot of boxes’, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The Midlands outfit have already added some significant strength to Steven Gerrard’s first-team squad, and are likely to make further additions in what remains of the summer window.

Aribo is reportedly attracting a lot of attention from a host of Premier League clubs after putting in a string of impressive displays for the Gers.

The Scottish Sun have reported that Villa, Crystal Palace and Fulham are behind newly-promoted Nottingham Forest in the race for the Nigeria international’s signature.

And any side could be set to secure themselves a bargain as Aribo’s current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2023, meaning a cut-price deal may be on the cards.

If the 25-year-old does make the move to Villa Park, then it will be the second time Gerrard has signed him in his short career having taken him to Ibrox from Charlton Athletic.

What has Crook said about Aribo?

The arrivals of Philippe Coutinho, Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara have bolstered the spine of Villa’s side following a disappointing 2021/22.

And although Crook informed GiveMeSport that the club’s hierarchy are in no hurry to add to the list of incomings, he believes a potential deal for Aribo could be appealing.

He told GMS: “I don’t think they’re in any great rush to add more faces, but Joe Aribo, obviously, he’s got that connection with Steven Gerrard from Rangers as well, so that ticks a lot of boxes.”

Do Aston Villa need Aribo?

Aribo is undoubtedly a talented player, racking up 82 goal contributions in 245 senior club games while playing a pivotal part in league and cup glory with Rangers.

However, whether Villa are in need of a player with his qualities is up for debate.

The 6 foot ace is most comfortable and effective when playing in the number 10 position just behind a striker or a strike partnership, yet Gerrard already has a couple of attractive options in that area of the pitch.

Both Coutinho and Emi Buendia are naturals in that role, and Villa may decide that focussing their attention and resources on other positions will take precedence in this window.
