Aston Villa will see out-of-work boss Mauricio Pochettino as ‘an attractive proposition’ as doubts over Steven Gerrard’s future in the Villa Park dugout continue, according to Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece.

Pochettino was sacked by French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and is seeking the right opportunity to return to management.

What’s the latest news involving Pochettino?

According to Football Insider, Pochettino is keen on the possibility of managing Villa as he plots a return to the Premier League.

The report suggests the 50-year-old, who was spotted watching England’s Nations League draw with Germany from the Wembley stands earlier this week, is very open to transforming the fortunes of a side which has struggled to make the most of the investment of owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.

It is understood that Pochettino is on a list of targets compiled by the Villa hierarchy in case they decide to show Gerrard the door, while The Athletic journalist David Ornstein – speaking on the Overlap Review – revealed the Argentinian would not discount a move to the Midlands.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton chief was reportedly under consideration to take over at Chelsea after the Blues sacked Thomas Tuchel, but Graham Potter was handed the reins instead.

Pochettino also turned down the opportunity to make a quickfire return to the French top flight after snubbing an approach made by Nice.

What has Ashley Preece said about Pochettino?

Preece believes Edens and Sawiris, along with chief executive Christian Purslow, would be interested in appointing Pochettino if they opt to dispense of Gerrard’s services.

The journalist feels the Villa hierarchy have already shown that they will not hesitate in welcoming another big name boss to the club.

Preece told GIVEMESPORT: “This type of calibre of manager would be an attractive proposition for the owners and for Christian Purslow, himself, as well.

“Villa like a big name and they’ve got one at the moment, with Steven Gerrard at the helm.”

Would Pochettino be a good Gerrard successor?

Pochettino may have been axed by PSG a matter of months ago, having failed to clinch the Champions League, but he still won three trophies during his time at the Parc des Princes.

While silverware eluded him in English football, he still boasts an impressive record in the Premier League having won 132 of his 256 matches at the helm.

However, having been allowed to spend more than £60million during the summer transfer window, it appears that Gerrard still has the backing of the Villa hierarchy for now.
