Aston Villa signing Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij this summer would be a “real coup”, says journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 30-year-old has just over a year left on his contract and is being linked with several clubs, including the Villans.

What is the latest news involving De Vrij?

According to Football Insider, De Vrij is a target for Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle United and has been told by Inter that he is free to leave in the upcoming transfer window.

The same report states that the Dutchman’s price tag has now dropped from £40m to £15m, meaning one of the above clubs could be about to get an absolute bargain.

De Vrij, who was a part of Inter’s title-winning team last season, is a centre-back with plenty of experience.

As well as the Nerazzurri, De Vrij has also played for their Serie A rivals Lazio, amassing over 200 Italian league appearances across his spells with both outfits, and the Netherlands national team.

What has O’Rourke said about De Vrij to Villa?

If Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens can deliver £31.5m-rated De Vrij this summer, O’Rourke thinks he would be some signing for the Midlands club.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: “There’s been a lot of clubs who have been linked with De Vrij in the past, so I think for Villa, it’d be a real coup if they manage to lure him to Villa Park. I’m sure they will be quite big players in this transfer market in the summer.”

Who could De Vrij replace at Villa?

It is anyone’s guess, with manager Steven Gerrard seemingly having doubts about both Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa.

Last month, Football Insider reported that Villa are looking to replace their captain this summer, and prior, the same outlet claimed that offers for his centre-half partner would also be considered.

There is a long way to go, though, before the Villans bring De Vrij in, with signing him likely to be a difficult task.

As already mentioned, other English clubs are also circling, while French giants Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to be interested in his signature.

Journalist Ignazio Genuardi (via Get French Football News) previously claimed that De Vrij could become an option for PSG if they miss out on Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, which they have with the German now set to join Real Madrid.

To put things simply, while De Vrij would undoubtedly be an incredible acquisition for Villa, bringing him to Villa Park could be complicated.
