Stoke City’s struggle in the EFL is continuing in 2022/23.

Despite a squad that should be performing far better, the Potters currently sit 18th in the table and very much drifting towards another campaign of nothingness now under the watch of Alex Neil.

There’s reason to be positive with Neil at the helm, of course, with the straight talking Scot doing good work with Norwich City, Preston North End and Sunderland previously.

A rebuild will be on the cards come the summer, though, with a number of players currently on Stoke’s books – both permanently and on loan – not destined to be around beyond the end of the season.

Looking at the goalkeeping department, Matija Sarkic is only with Stoke on an initial loan, whilst Jack Bonham and Frank Fielding are also approaching the final months of their contracts at the bet365 Stadium.

Morgan Fox is a defender that will see his contract expire in the summer and Axel Tuanzebe, Ki-Jana Hoever and Dujon Sterling are a trio of loan players currently available to Neil that won’t be come the summer. Aden Flint is another defender worth mentioning, he’s on loan with Sheffield Wednesday and out of contract at the end of the season.

Moving into midfield, there are loanees in Ben Pearson and Will Smallbone, with Sam Clucas a permanent player that will be off contract when the summer comes around. Peter Etebo and Mario Vrancic are in a similar situation to Flint out on loan but heading into their contract’s end.

Nick Powell is the headline attacker heading towards his final months as a Stoke player, whilst he’s a serious talent and a player you’d traditionally look to keep, his injuries have been a major issue. Bersant Celina is on a temporary deal until this season concludes, having only just arrived in Stoke.

Things can change, of course, with Stoke having time to focus on contract agreements now January is over. A season that looks like it will drift into a lower-mid table finish means that pre-planning can begin for the summer, giving Stoke a head start on some of their divisional rivals.

Whilst that’s disappointing and fans will point to another wasted year in the Championship, it can be a positive thing too, particularly with so much work to be done in the next transfer window.
