Arthur Melo has found opportunities hard to come by since joining Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

The midfielder, who joined Liverpool on loan from Juventus on transfer deadline day, has only played 14 minutes of football in a red shirt thus far.

But Arthur is doing everything in his power to build up his fitness and force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

Arthur denies chance to go away for international break

Liverpool do not have a game for two weeks and the Brazilian had the opportunity to go away for the international break.

But he chose to stay in Merseyside and build up his fitness.

“Arthur has been in over the international break to play games and build up his fitness,” Liverpool U21s coach Barry Lewtas told the Liverpool Echo.

“That’s off his own back, so that shows his level of professionalism. He has been great with the lads as well. He has been first-class.

“In training on Monday he was excellent, he really drove the lads and as a matchday minus one, it’s probably the best one we’ve had.

“He wants to get fit, he doesn’t need a week off, so it’s come from him. He doesn’t speak Scouse and I don’t speak Portuguese, but I think you can tell from the body language. In the meetings we went through some extra things and cleared a few things up. He has embraced it.

“He first trained with us on Friday. He trained with the first team, and then he had a session with us for the team that was going to play against Leicester. He’ll do a little work with us during the international break.”

Arthur plays against Rochdale in Papa John’s Trophy

Arthur played 90 minutes for Liverpool U21s in their Premier League 2 game against Leicester U21s.

He then asked to play in Liverpool U21s Papa John’s Trophy match against Rochdale on Tuesday evening.

“I don’t think he knew where we were going, but he knew we had a game!” Lewtas said.

“But he wanted to play 100%, that is very clear. From what I’ve been told, Arthur asked to play.”

Arthur put in an assured display against Rochdale. He played 63 minutes before being replaced by Liverpool player/coach, Jay Spearing.

His highlights from the match have been compiled by Twitter user @CF_Compss and you can view them below…

What next for Arthur?

Arthur’s commitment and desire to getting up to full speed would no doubt have impressed Klopp.

The German manager has not given Arthur many opportunities thus far but it seems only a matter of time until he makes his first start for the club.

Arthur will look to be involved when the Reds take on Brighton & Hove Albion in their Premier League clash at Anfield on October 1.
