Reiss Nelson picked up a hamstring injury in training, and the first signs don’t look good, according to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta.

Reiss Nelson was a surprise absence from the Arsenal squad named by Mikel Arteta for Saturday’s game against Sheffield United. Arsenal confirmed a hamstring injury before the game, and Arteta explained more afterwards.

“We had an incident in training,” Arteta said. “The doctors are still deciding how long it’s going to take, but it’s not looking good.”

Nelson’s luck certainly isn’t in this season. He scored and assisted against Nottingham Forest in September, assisted another goal in his next start against Standard Liege, then picked up a knee injury immediately afterwards.

Just as he gets back to fitness and form, scoring against Leeds, a hamstring injury strikes.

Last time, Nelson missed from October 3rd to November 1st. He then returned to the pitch with the u23s, but had to wait until December 9th for another senior appearance.

From the sounds of things, this injury is no less serious than the first one. As a result, we expect him to miss the next few games until at least after the winter break. Arsenal’s break is between February 2nd and February 16th.

Whether he’s ready to return after that, we’ll only know when we have further information about his injury.
