Arsenal are flying in the Premier League right now and Mikel Arteta has deservedly been named the Manager of the Month for January.

The Gunners are unbeaten in the league so far in 2023 and have secured impressive victories over Spurs and Man United.

Given many Arsenal fans were calling for Arteta to be sacked less than two years ago, it’s been a truly remarkable turnaround by the Spaniard.

Indeed, there is a growing belief among the Gunners faithful that Arteta really could be the person to deliver a first Premier League title since the great Arsene Wenger did so with the invincibles in 2003/04.

Having taken over Arsenal in 2019, Arteta has now won the Manager of the Month accolade on five occasions – that’s already more than Jose Mourinho, who won it just four times.

Considering Mourinho won the Premier League on three occasions with Chelsea and managed both Man United and Spurs for a period of time – Arteta’s achievement is mightily impressive.

Who has won the most Premier League Manager of the Month awards?

While Arteta has already won the award five times, he is still some way short of the leading pack, which includes some Premier League royalty.

In fact, there are 10 managers who have received the accolade more than five times – some of whom are still managing in the league today.

Sam Allardyce and Bobby Robson have both been honoured with the award on six occasions, while Rafa Benitez won it seven times during his stints at Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea.

Martin O’Neill and Harry Redknapp were both named Manager of the Month eight times – just behind Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who is a nine-time recipient.

West Ham manager David Moyes is a 10-time winner of the accolade and is just one behind Pep Guardiola, with 11 awards.

Guardiola’s record Is pretty astounding and he is closing in on Wenger’s 15 wins in second place.

Yet, the Man City boss was stunned to find out how much he’s still behind Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 27 Manager of the Month awards.

Guardiola’s reaction to Ferguson’s record

Back in December 2021, a reporter asked Guardiola: “You’ve won 11 now, Pep – only Wenger and Ferguson have won more than you. So, is that something for you to be proud of?”

The City boss then remarked with a wry smile: “Be careful, Sir Alex, Arsene… I’m coming…”

In response, the reporter replied: “[Ferguson] won 27, Pep, so not too many…”

Guardiola’s reaction was priceless.

“How many?!” he said. “Oh my god!

“Okay… it belongs to him!

“I will not chase him for sure.”
