What the second rate sports presenter fails to understand is that the decision isn’t strictly that of the Gunners manager, there is input from up above. Arteta’s concerns are regarding Ozil’s application and work rate whereas, those above him are incensed by his ability to constantly put himself in a contrary position to the club. Arteta and Ozil are alleged to have had words during training on more than one occasion, but the German is no stranger to mixing it with his managers, having fallen out with German national coach Joachim Low and former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who referred to him as “a coward” and “a crybaby.”

The midfielder can’t seem to avoid his share of trouble and during his time at Arsenal, he has mistakenly decided to play out each episode of the saga on social media, unsurprisingly portraying himself in a favourable light. Ozil’s previous remarks have had financial repercussions with the cancellation of their televised games in China thus depriving the club of vital revenue.

He then posted his readiness for the season ahead in an appeal to the Arsenal fans, almost daring the coach not to pick him. Arteta didn’t and that was the manager’s decision but he, like Emery before him, had the full support of the Arsenal board.

The Arsenal number 10 then publicly vowed to pay the wage of ‘Gunnersaurus’, who was part of the cuts following the pandemic and declared that he would pay the salary as long as he was at the club. That didn’t go down well with his employer’s.

It now seems that Ozil will certainly not play again for Arsenal after being left out of the 25-man Premier League squad. This comes after the German was excluded from the Europa League squad last week. The decision means that their highest paid player will not feature for them in the Premier League as well as Europa League, most probably, ever.

Ozil has burnt all his bridges and he will continue to spend his time playing his football only on the training pitches. If Arsenal were intending to restore him to the first team it would surely have happened by now. Arteta has Partey, Ceballos, Xhaka, and Elneny at his disposal and there’s a host of youngsters that he can call upon. Arteta hasn’t failed Özil, Özil’s managed to shut down his career whilst robbing the club and the fans.

Özil was indeed a talent, but one suspects that it was an overpriced and inconsistent one at best. As we begin to head towards Christmas, Özil’s faint hope of a revival becomes as likely as a reprieve for an overweight Turkey.

Some are hoping that he is forgiven and that he forms a partnership with Partey and Ceballos for the remainder of the season but that’s wishful thinking, given that he hasn’t featured in the side for around six months. Actually, that midfield doesn’t look that bad Mikel!
