Arsene Wenger praises “special” Louis van Gaal during 2022 FIFA World Cup | OneFootball

Arsene Wenger has praised Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal for his approach to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and insists “something special” is happening, NOS reports.

FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development praised Van Gaal’s approach to the competition in Qatar despite some criticisms over Oranje’s defensive approach at times while speaking at a press event in Doha.

When asked about the Dutch national side’s style of play, Wenger acknowledged the history and tradition of Oranje’s play being very attacking-focused but argues Van Gaal is playing to his side’s strengths.

“The best way to stop the discussion in the Netherlands is to go home with the World Cup,” Wenger summed up when asked. “The Netherlands have three top defenders in the centre. You then have to use those in their strengths. I don’t want to label Van Gaal as a conservative coach.

“Historically, Dutch football has always been very attacking. This World Cup they have less ball possession, but at the moment that works for them. Van Gaal, with all his experience, knows exactly what he is doing,” said the former Arsenal coach.
