Naomi Williams has joined Bristol City on a season-long loan, leaving Arsenal in search of the senior minutes that have eluded her in north London.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper has been part of Arsenal’s set-up since the age of 13, signing her first professional contract in June 2023 after progressing through the academy.

She has been a regular presence in senior matchday squads, including on the bench during Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League triumph earlier this year, but has yet to make a competitive first-team appearance.

Williams has trained extensively alongside Manuela Zinsberger and Daphne van Domselaar, gaining experience in one of the most competitive goalkeeping departments in Europe. Her potential has long been recognised within the club, her athleticism and reflexes marking her out as a player capable of challenging for a senior role in future seasons.

Bristol, aiming for promotion back to the Women’s Super League, view Williams as a key addition. Head coach Charlotte Healy said: “Naomi has spent several years in Arsenal’s first team squad, so this will be a valuable first loan for her.

“It’s important to have strength in depth and competition across the squad so we’re all excited to have her here with us joining Fran and Emily in our GK Department.”

Williams, who has also featured for England at under-23 level, sees the move as the next step in her career. “It feels amazing to be out on my first loan and to be here at Bristol City and to be a part of something great is exciting,” she said.

“The fans are amazing and I’m excited to get out on the pitch and see the fans there!”
