Arsenal’s summer mission: What Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta must deliver in the transfer market

Arsenal’s steady climb under Mikel Arteta has brought them back into serious contention, but with Liverpool reclaiming the Premier League title last season, the Gunners still have another level to reach.

The arrival of Andrea Berta, formerly of Atlético Madrid, as sporting director signals intent, and this summer’s transfer window could prove pivotal in their pursuit of domestic and European silverware.

We’ve had a look at what they need to do…

The missing striker

Their final tally of 74 points, ten behind champions Liverpool, is 15 fewer than they won when they also finished runners-up last season. Their 22 fewer goals than the 91 they scored last season was a concern. It is also the first season none of their players have reached double figures since 1924 – a clear indicator of where the problems lie, injury issues or not.

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko would fit the Arsenal model, in that he is young, outrageously talented and has the potential to be a world beater. Sporting’s Victor Gyokeres could also be a transformative addition. People have stopped talking about Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney, but could they be last resort options if they do not get their business done early?

Defensive depth and balance

The departure of Kieran Tierney and possibly Alex Zinchenko combined with injury concerns over Gabriel, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jurrien Timber, Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori is why Arsenal are targeting another young defender to bolster numbers at the back. Depth and durability are key as Arsenal look to handle the demands of both the Premier League and Champions League.

Midfield revamp needed

While Declan Rice proved to be one of the players of the season, Arsenal’s midfield was lacking when Thomas Partey was absent and Martin Odegaard injured and then struggling for form. That is why they are close to signing Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi, as well as due to Thomas Partey’s possible departure and Jorginho’s exit. Another addition might be needed too.

Carefully considered exits

Arteta has demanded a bigger squad after pointing out he was too short on numbers last season. With numerous players, perhaps too many, leaving last summer, Arsenal need to be more circumspect in who they release. Obvious candidates to create space and generate funds would be Fabio Vieira, Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga.

Importance of experience

To close the gap on Liverpool and stay ahead of Manchester City, Arsenal must sign players with proven winning pedigree. Leaders who rise in pressure moments — particularly in Europe — are vital. Experience and a ruthless edge must complement the club’s exciting young core.

This summer is a defining window for Arsenal. With Arteta’s project close to coming to fruition and Berta now guiding recruitment, the time to make the final leap is now. Bold, focused investment could be what finally ends the Gunners’ long wait for glory.
