Only four minutes into their game against Canada, the Arsenal wide player scored direct from a corner as her curling ball in clipped both the crossbar and far post.

Canada goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was left dumbfounded as Ireland made a superb start to their Group B game.

However, the North Americans got back into it on the verge of the break when Megan Connolly diverted a cross into her own net. Adriana Leon then struck in the 53rd minute to secure a 2-1 win.

Ireland were therefore knocked out before Australia’s game against Nigeria on Thursday.

Elsewhere in Wednesday’s World Cup action, Japan and Spain both claimed big wins in Group C.

Teresa Abelleira opened the scoring for Spain against Zambia with a stunning long-range effort while Jennifer Hermoso and Alba Redondo scoring twice as a 5-0 win sent them into the last 16.
