Arsenal’s Champions League earnings dwarf Europa League

Article image:Arsenal’s Champions League earnings dwarf Europa League

Arsenal’s nail-biting victory over Porto not only secured a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, but also a massive financial windfall.

The club stands to earn significantly more compared to their Europa League campaign and have even set a new club record.

Reaching the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in fourteen years represents a significant financial boost for Arsenal.

Compared to the €25 million earned in last year’s Europa League, Arsenal is set to receive just over €91 million this season in Champions League riches.

If the club wins the entire competition, that prize money could increase to approximately €130 million. I said ‘if’.

This substantial increase in revenue highlights the vast financial gap between the two European competitions and why Arsenal recently said qualification for the Champions League is integral for their financial sustainability.

Arsenal’s European success brings record-breaking financial boost

Arsenal’s victory over FC Porto may have secured them a place in the Champions League quarter-finals but the €91.3m (£78.1m) they have now earned also set a new club record for European prize money in a single season.

Champions League prize money

Here’s a summary of the prize money for all stages of the Champions League 23/24:

The Champions League prize money is divided into three parts:

Performance-based prize money: This makes up 55% of the total prize pot. The winner receives €20 million (£17.1m/$21.6m).

Coefficient payout: This is 30% of the total prize pot and is paid to all 32 clubs in the Champions League group stage. It’s based on a coefficient algorithm that ranks their European performance over a 10-year period.

Broadcast market payout: This is 15% of the total prize pot, and is made available as part of the broadcast revenue once all the broadcast deals are finalised across Europe.

Here’s the prize money breakdown:

Qualification:

Playoff Round: Winners receive €5m (£4.4m).

Group Stage:

  • Per Match Win: €2.8m (£2.4m).
  • Per Match Draw: €930,000 (£819,000).
  • Group Stage Qualification: €9.6m (£8.4m).

Knockout Stages:

  • Round of 16: €9.6m (£8.4m).
  • Quarter-finals: €10.6m (£9.3m).
  • Semi-finals: €12.5m (£11.0m).
  • Runner-up: €15.5m (£13.6m).
  • Winner: €20m (£17.6m).

The last Arsenal XI to reach the Champions League quarter-finals

The last Arsenal team to reach the Champions League quarter finals also did that by beating Porto.

That game finished 5-0 on the night, a much more relaxed fare than we were served on this time around.
