According to reports, Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester City are ‘working on’ a swap deal involving Kieran Tierney and Joao Cancelo.

Tierney is being heavily linked with a move away from Arsenal ahead of this summer. He has slipped behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in the pecking order this season.

The Scotland international has made 34 appearances across all competitions but he has only started six times in the Premier League.

It is unclear where Tierney will end up this summer but Mikel Arteta is clearly looking to adjust his defence. To help him do this, Man City outcast Cancelo has emerged as a potential target.

The Portugal star was a key player for Man City up until earlier this season but a reported fallout with Pep Guardiola led to him joining Bayern Munich on loan.

Football Transfers are reporting that ‘Arsenal and Manchester City are in talks over a potential exchange that will see Tierney and Cancelo swap clubs this summer’.

If this deal goes through, Arteta will reportedly use Cancelo ‘as the starting right back, while Ben White will be the backup in that role and first backup at centre back to William Saliba’.

Bayern Munich are ‘unlikely’ to sign Cancelo on a permanent basis, while Man City are ‘looking for a versatile left back who can also play at centre back and Tierney perfectly ticks those boxes’. The report adds.

‘Arsenal rejected City’s move in January because Tierney was their only recognised cover at left-back, while selling to a title rival was always likely to prove problematic in the middle of the season. ‘City remain interested, while Tierney would consider a move as Arsenal are unable to give him the assurances he desires on playing time. ‘One of the big potential stumbling blocks in a swap deal being made is Man City’s asking price for Cancelo. ‘City value Cancelo at £60 million and it remains to be seen whether Arsenal share that opinion when the calculations are made for the overall valuations of both players. ‘But these are two transfers to watch in the coming weeks, with a swap deal very much an option on the table.’

Man City are not the only team interested in Tierney. According to Football Insider, the defender is Newcastle United’s ‘top summer target’.

The Magpies are ‘in a very strong position to now complete the signing of Tierney’, who is ‘keen to move closer to his family and Newcastle presents the best opportunity for him to be closer to Scotland’.

The chances of Tierney leaving Arsenal are ‘growing’ and they ‘privately value him at around £30m’. The report points out that Aston Villa and Man City are also interested in him.
