Arsenal and Celtic bowed out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League on penalties, Glasgow City beat Gintra to go through.

Arsenal twice came from behind to force extra-time and then penalties before eventually losing the shoot-out 4-2 to Paris FC. Mathilde Bourdieu struck twice for the French side, Alessia Russo replied and Jen Beattie netted a stoppage-time header. Julie Soyer restored the lead before Russo finished from outside the box but when it came to penalties, Chiamaka Nnadozie decided the tie by saving from the Gunners’ new striker.

Celtic were defeated by Vålerenga following a shoot-out of 22 penalties, all of which were converted bar the last by Hoops’ keeper Kelsey Daugherty. The Norwegian side took an early lead but Kit Loferski swiftly levelled and six minutes from the end of extra-time, Jenny Smith buried Murphy Agnew’s cutback. But heartbreak was to follow for Fran Alonso’s side, as the hosts levelled from 12 yards on 120 minutes and went on to win penalty competition.

Glasgow City’s Brenna Lovera took just 45 seconds to score against Gintra, Kenzie Weir made it 2-0 from Cori Sullivan’s corner, with lauren Davidson adding a third in the second half.

Shelbourne beat Cardiff City Women 3-0 in a Group 3rd-place play off. Noelle Murray’s penalty hit the post but she netted the rebound, later scoring from distance before Libby Moore completed the scoring.

Daniella Maxwell and Marissa Callaghan found the net for Cliftonville but they lost their third-place tie 4-2 to Kazygurt.

The round 2 draw on 15 September will set 12 ties to be played on 10/11 and 18/19 October, deciding who joins the direct group-stage entrants Barcelona, Lyon, Bayern München and Chelsea.

Round 2 is split into two paths: the champions path (with 14 teams competing for seven group places) and the league path (ten teams competing for five group spots). Both consist of two-legged ties.

The 15 teams progressing from round 1 join the clubs beginning at this stage, two-time champions and 2022/23 runners-up Wolfsburg, twice finalists Paris Saint-Germain, another of last season’s quarter-finalists in Roma and debutants Manchester United.

In the Champions path, the 11 winners of the round 1 finals join the three teams entering at this stage: Slavia Praha, Rosengård and Roma. Seven teams will emerge from as many ties to enter the group stage.
