Arsenal ‘will push again next week’ for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez as the race for his signature heats up, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners are battling Premier League rivals Manchester United for the 24-year-old’s services with both sides eager to improve their options across the backline.

What is the latest news involving Martinez?

A recent report from the Manchester Evening News revealed that United have made a €43million (£37m) offer for Martinez.

New manager Erik ten Hag is targeting players either currently at Ajax or who have a previous association with them but are set to face competition from Arsenal for the Argentina international.

Sky Sports then claimed that Martinez took time out from his holiday to inform the Amsterdam outfit’s hierarchy that his intention is to make a switch to the Premier League this summer.

However, the talented centre-back is yet to decide between United and Arsenal, leaving the race wide open at this moment in time.

The Athletic have disclosed that the north London outfit are set to meet with Ajax officials over the coming days and will demand around €50m (£43m) for Martinez.

What has Romano said about Martinez?

Arsenal have already wrapped up deals for Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos in the current window, adding significant strength to Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad.

And the capital club are set to try and add Martinez to their ranks next, with Romano informing GiveMeSport that they are set to make a renewed assault imminently.

He told GMS this evening: “It’s a big fight because Arsenal are still there. Arsenal will push again next week also with Ajax.”

Where would Martinez fit in?

Martinez may not be viewed as an essential acquisition by some Arsenal fans due to the presence of Gabriel, Benjamin White, William Saliba and Rob Holding in Arteta’s setup.

Nevertheless, the South American’s versatility alone could be a hugely valuable addition to Arsenal with him able to play as a holding midfielder and a left-back alongside his most natural role at the heart of defence.

As a result, Martinez, who earns £43,000-per-week, could provide cover and competition to the likes of Kieran Tierney, Granit Xhaka and Gabriel.

European football is set to return to the Emirates Stadium next term, and if Arsenal want to battle on multiple fronts, then significant strength in depth will be required, and Martinez would add that in abundance.
