Arsenal’s Europa League campaign has been perfect so far.
Mikel Arteta’s side have won all four of their matches in the competitions and have already qualified for the knockout rounds.
Anything other than a defeat against PSV on Thursday and the Gunners will have secured top spot too – which means avoiding a further knockout round.
Arteta has used the competition to rotate his squad and, while they may have won all four matches, it hasn’t always been convincing with victories by a single goal in three of their four games.
But with qualification secured, they can perhaps turn their attention to maintaining their top spot in the Premier League between now and the World Cup break.
It’s unclear exactly who will be starting against PSV, we know they will be wearing a rather bizarre kit at the Philips Stadium.
Last weekend during the 1-1 draw against Southampton, Arsenal played in their all-black away kit despite Southampton wearing black shorts.
However, UEFA don’t like short clashes either meaning Arsenal aren’t able to play in their away kit in its entirety.
They also can’t wear their pink third choice kit as it’s too similar to PSV’s red and white.
It means they will have to wear a mix-match of their away kit with their home shirts. It’s a bizarre combination that UEFA have confirmed on their official website.
Arsenal fans have been reacting to the news on social media.
While UEFA appear to have confirmed the white shorts, journalist Simon Collings has suggested Arsenal could be made to wear ‘bespoke’ grey shorts with their away kit.
Whatever the combination, it’s going to be a strange one.
Arteta won’t care too much what Arsenal look like, though, as long as they win.
They did exactly that last week against their Dutch opponent with Granit Xhaka scoring the only goal of a game in which they dominated.
Arteta was pleased with their performance last week – but believes they need to be more clinical in the final third away from home.
“We are really pleased with the performance and with what the boys showed,” Arteta said. “We had some really dominant and good moments, but we lacked in the final third and the final action to put more shots on target and to score more goals, I think.”
