Arsenal want clarity before making new Raphinha bid

Arsenal are looking to get clarity on Raphinha’s preference before making another offer to Leeds United, with Chelsea set for further talks today.

Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports reports that Arsenal are yet to make another official offer for Raphinha, as Edu is wary of wasting his time negotiating if the player prefers Chelsea.

Instead, Edu is looking to get clarity on the situation from Raphinha’s agent Deco before proceeding.

Jacobs adds that it ultimately comes down to Raphinha at this stage, and the player hasn’t yet made a decision. Chelsea have talks over personal terms today, but failure to agree could give Barcelona the upper hand.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal and Barcelona will keep trying until the end, and they can’t be ruled out yet. Barcelona met with Deco again on Wednesday.

But at this stage, Chelsea are the only club to agree a fee with Leeds.

Goal in Brazil report that Leeds are waiting for a new bid from Arsenal, to see if they can spark a bidding war.

That seems unlikely, though. The best-case scenario is probably Arsenal matching Chelsea’s offer, you can’t imagine the Gunners going beyond it.

Even if Arsenal also agree a fee with Leeds, it’s not going to be easy to convince Raphinha to pick them – hence Edu’s hesitance.

Chelsea have Champions League football, and they’re probably better positioned to win trophies in the immediate future.

Arsenal’s proposal would need to rely on offering Raphinha a key squad role, a long-term project and perhaps the chance to work with his Brazilian teammates Gabriel Jesus, Martinelli, and Magalhaes.

David Ornstein previously reported that there’s talk Thomas Tuchel might use Raphinha as a wing-back, whilst Arsenal would play him in his favoured position as a winger.

That’s another positive, particularly as Raphinha will want to impress on the wings ahead of the World Cup.
