Asensio – who has spent the last eight seasons with Madrid, contributing 61 goals and 32 assists in 285 appearances – is on the move from the Bernabeu at the end of his contract having rejected an offer to extend his stay.
Mikel Arteta is looking to bolster his attacking options in the transfer window, with the Spanish boss particularly keen to lighten the load on the young shoulders of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, and reports claimed the Gunners had ‘turned their attention’ to Asensio.
But there was long-established competition from AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, and The Athletic claim the Ligue 1 giants now have a deal in place.
Asensio will earn around £8.5million-a-year at PSG with his salary and bonuses and the transfer will be completed after the weekend.
Although they’ve missed out on Asensio, 90min claim Arsenal have ‘touched base’ over a move for Rasmus Hojlund, with the 20-year-old making it clear to Atalanta through agents SEG that he would like to move on following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.
The reports states: ‘Chelsea have already held talks with Atalanta about a possible deal, with Atalanta chief executive Luca Percassi visiting England in April for exploratory discussions. Man Utd are now talking with Percassi, while Arsenal, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have also touched base with Atalanta and the player’s agents.’
United’s interest was confirmed by The Athletic, who also claim the Red Devils have ‘held detailed talks’ over a move for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani, though ‘Hojlund is ‘seen as the likelier player to join United at this stage’.
United have a possible advantage over Arsenal in that SEG are also Erik ten Hag’s agents, while Chelsea are presumably out of the running with Hojlund wanting Champions League football.
It’s thought Atalanta will listen to offers of £55m for their prized asset.
