Arsenal are preparing to offer Granit Xhaka a new contract following a lack of progress over the midfielder’s proposed move to Roma.

Xhaka has been linked with a move to the Italian side throughout the transfer window with Jose Mourinho keen to reinforce his midfield with the signing of the Switzerland international, though a deal has failed to materialise.

Arsenal were prepared to allow the 28-year-old to leave with his stock high following an impressive Euro 2020 campaign, with Mikel Arteta keen to overhaul his midfielder with a player of a different profile.

However, there have been no ‘sufficient’ bids being received despite reported interest from Roma and The Athletic are reporting that the Gunners are now prepared to offer Xhaka a new deal.

Xhaka currently has two years remaining on his contract at the Emirates and a new deal will protect his value.

The north London side have been linked with signing an experienced midfielder this summer, but prospective moves for Manuel Locatelli and Ruben Neves have failed to result in anything tangible.

Summer signing Albert Sambi Lokonga has potential, but will be given time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League following the 21-year-old’s arrival from Anderlecht.

Arsenal have struggled to raise funds through sales this summer and it now looks as if Xhaka’s occasionally turbulent time at the Emirates could continue, with there appearing little wisdom in sanctioning his sale and splashing out on a new midfielder given more pressing concerns elsewhere in the side.

It remains to be seen whether talk of a new deal will encourage Roma to pull their finger out and submit an offer for the former Basel and Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder.
