Marcelo Flores confirmed his decision to play for the Mexican national team on Monday, whilst giving his thanks to England and Canada.

Posting on his Twitter account this week, Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores confirmed: “I will represent Mexico wholeheartedly for the rest of my professional life.”

As the youngster details in his statement, he was eligible to play for both Canada and England. He was born and raised in Canada to a Canadian mother, and he now considers England to be his home.

But after thanking both of those countries and declaring his love for each of them, he admitted he feels most comfortable with the Mexican National Team – just like his two sisters.

It can’t be easy for a young player to have to decide between their own nationalities. Flores is Mexican, and he’s Canadian, and he’s English, but he has to leave two of those identities behind on the international stage.

The good news is that he’s made the decision and can just focus on football again.

Whether Mexico call him up for matches in the near future or he has to wait a bit longer, he won’t be facing every interview answering questions about which option he’ll choose.

Mexico have given Flores a couple of cameo opportunities already, albeit both as a substitute in friendly matches outside of the usual international break windows.

The 18-year-old still has some work to do to get into the Mexican senior side for competitive fixtures, but he’s hoping that’s a possibility before this year’s World Cup.

“Do I want to go to the upcoming World Cup? Sure, every Mexican child dreams of playing in a World Cup,” Flores wrote in his statement.

“But I recognise, that decision is not for me to make. I will focus on getting better every day and being ready for when those opportunities come around.”
