Arsenal have made a £60m bid for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo as they push for his signature before the deadline, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners have been on the lookout for the right midfielder to add to their squad in January but an injury to Mohamed Elneny has now possibly forced their hand ahead of the transfer deadline.

When asked yesterday whether the Egpyt international could miss the rest of the season, Mikel Arteta told reporters earlier this week: “There are concerns.

“Mo is a player who never complains about anything. But let’s see. He had some issues with his knee that we are assessing at the moment.”

Pushed on whether it could see Arsenal enter the market for a midfielder, Arteta added: “Well, we need some more cover in midfield ideally if we can.

“In this market it’s pretty complicated to do that. The most important thing is that we get the performances and the time on the pitch that we need with the players we have available today that are already really good.

“If there’s anything else available that can make us better, we’ll look at it.”

And now it looks like Arteta and technical director Edu have taken a step towards reinforcing their midfield before the end of the transfer window, with transfer expert Romano claiming Arsenal have made a bid for Brighton’s Caicedo after Chelsea had a “£55m verbal proposal rejected”.

Romano tweeted: “Arsenal have submitted £60m bid to sign Moises Caicedo as new midfielder. Chelsea had £55m verbal proposal rejected this January as Brighton hope to keep the player — but Arsenal are now pushing. Negotiations enter into key stages for Caicedo’s future.”

Chelsea have been mooted as suitors all winter and there have been suggestions Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also a fan with former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson urging the German to make a bid.

Speaking last week, Robinson told Football Insider: “Caicedo is a marvellous player.

“I’ve watched in a person a couple of times this season and I was extremely impressed. He plays well beyond his years. I can’t believe he is just 21.

“If Chelsea are going make a move Liverpool should do the same. They do not want to miss out on him.

“He is just the kind of player Jurgen Klopp needs. They are lacking a bit of bite in their midfield. Caicedo would bring that.

“It will not be cheap though especially if Chelsea are interested. We are going to be talking about £60million at least. Brighton are not in a position where they need to sell and they won’t sell unless the money is too good to turn down. We all saw what happened with [Marc] Cucurella.”
