Arsenal youth striker Chido Martin Obi has been in excellent form for the Gunners’ u18s this season, scoring 32 goals and assisting a further three in just 18 league games for Jack Wilshere’s side.

But Martin Obi is now looking to carry that form into his international matches, with Denmark playing at the u17 European Championships.

The Denmark u17s began their campaign on Monday, playing a group game against Wales, and Martin Obi was named in the starting lineup for the match.

Though he didn’t have the busiest first half, Martin Obi always looked dangerous when the ball fell to him.

The 16-year-old had an early shot on his weak foot that went narrowly high and wide, then a couple of half chances where tackles came in just in time to prevent a shot.

At one point Martin Obi held off pressure excellently to create space in the box and play a pass across the area, but no one in a Denmark shirt could connect.

Denmark were much the better side in the opening 45 minutes, and the pressure eventually told as Martin Obi raced in behind to latch onto a through ball, before rounding the goalkeeper and tapping into an empty net for 1-0.

Denmark doubled their lead early in the second half as Sofus Johannesen capitalised on a goalkeeping error for 2-0, and Martin Obi almost made it three with a strong run and shot in the 83rd minute.

But Martin Obi came off soon after that with a minor blow to the face, and the match finished 2-0. Arsenal’s Brayden Clarke wouldn’t have been so happy with the result, with the defender playing for Wales on the day.

With Austria and Croatia drawing 0-0 in the other game, Denmark lead the group after the first matchday.
