Brazilian striker Jesus was stretchered off during Sunday’s FA Cup third round home defeat by Manchester United with a knee issue and is now set to undergo surgery on what turned out to be an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

“Further to being substituted during our match with Manchester United on Sunday, Gabriel Jesus has received extensive assessments, scans and specialist reviews which have confirmed that he has sustained an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” Arsenal said in a statement on Tuesday night.

“Gabby will undergo surgery in the coming days and will soon begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme.

“We will continue to keep everyone updated with Gabby’s recovery, with everyone at the club fully focused on supporting Gabby to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”

Jesus is now facing months on the sidelines, further exacerbating Arsenal’s well-documented struggles in attack with Bukayo Saka also out until March at the earliest after undergoing surgery on a torn hamstring last month.

The Gunners’ players showed their support with a tribute to Jesus ahead of Wednesday’s crucial north London derby against Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium, with every Arsenal star emerging from the tunnel before the game wearing an Arsenal shirt with Jesus’ name and No9 on the back.

At the bottom of every shirt was a message that read: “Stay strong Gabby.”
