Jorginho’s new contract with Arsenal isn’t as long as initially reported, according to the latest claims following the deal’s official confirmation.

On Thursday, Arsenal confirmed a new contract for midfielder Jorginho, choosing not to publicly state the exact length of the deal in their post.

But it was notable that the official announcement made no reference to a “long-term” deal, as most Arsenal contract extensions do.

According to reports, that’s because Jorginho has only signed on for one more year.

Previous reports had suggested that Jorginho would either sign a two-year deal or a one-year deal with an option to extend for another. But neither of those claims appear to be the case.

Fabrizio Romano and Sky Sports report that Jorginho has signed a one-year deal, with Romano adding that the new contract does not include a formal option to extend.

Mikel Arteta and Edu got their wish to keep the player around, but Jorginho will be out of contract again in 2025. If Arsenal want him to stay beyond that date, they’ll have to renegotiate again next season.

The reason Arsenal had to negotiate with Jorginho to begin with was that the formal one-year option in his previous deal expired due to his limited minutes since joining.

If the midfielder had played more, Arsenal could simply have activated their option to 2025. But because injuries and new signings have kept Jorginho from being a guaranteed starter, the option expired and new contract talks began.

Jorginho has made 35 appearances for Arsenal this season, including 19 starts. He’s now secured his future in north London for at least one more campaign.
