It was tough sledding for the Gunners from the first whistle as they struggled to take advantage of the gulf in quality and create any meaningful scoring chances.

Arsenal felt they should have been given the chance to jump ahead late in the first half when an Albert Sambi Lokonga effort hit the hand of an onrushing Oxford defender in the box but with no VAR available, no penalty-kick was given.

Finally, the deadlock was broken just past the hour mark when Mohamed Elneny headed home from a free-kick to score his first goal for the club since May 2021.

The Egyptian’s strike appeared to open the floodgates for the visitors as they opened up the Oxford defence just seven minutes later when Eddie Nketiah was played in behind and rounded the keeper before slotting home.

The tie was finished when Nketiah scored his second on the night six minutes later, putting the cherry on top of a superb second half from the Premier League leaders.

With the result, Arsenal can now set their sights on the FA Cup fourth round where they face a daunting trip to the Etihad to face off with Manchester City.
