Arsenal intend to spend money again in January, with a central midfielder the most likely target, according to a report.

The Daily Mail report that Arsenal intend to spend again in January, with a new central midfielder on their radar.

The Gunners made a few big-money acquisitions over the summer, bringing in Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City, as well as adding Fabio Vieira from FC Porto, and lower-profile deals in Matt Turner and Marquinhos.

But it was clear that Arsenal wanted to do more business if the right players were available. They made moves for Raphinha and Douglas Luiz that were knocked back, suggesting an interest in adding a winger and a central midfielder in future windows.

It looks like midfield is the priority, perhaps with Mohamed Elneny and Emile Smith Rowe’s long-term absences in mind.

Though they’ll both hopefully be back by the new year, their injuries have emphasised how short Arsenal are in the middle.

As for who Arsenal might bring in, it’s not yet clear. There are rumours they could make another move for Aston Villa’s Luiz, or Palmeiras’ Danilo, or perhaps they’ll end up pursuing a different midfielder entirely.

We have the World Cup between now and then, a competition which always seems to cause havoc in the market.

Regardless of the eventual target, it seems Arsenal aren’t planning for a January window as quiet as last year’s.
